Ode to Chocolate

The other day I happened upon this wonderful store - Hershey's Chocolate World. I had gotten off the MRT (public transportation) to try and find a bus (bad decision - can't seem to figure out the bus thing) and saw this store across the street. Of course I had to go in - just to browse and see and touch all the wonderful chocolate.

Everything was ridiculously expensive (or course!) - a bag of Hershey Kisses was like $8- but there's something about knowing you can buy it and where you can get it. There was every kind of Hershey candy bar, packaged candy, chocolate syrup, etc. - even Twizzlers. It's funny how much one can appreciate American brands! The funny thing is, for a chocolate lover, Hershey's isn't even that great - but it's familiar. I came away with a single York Peppermint Patty - and a skip in my step!

The next day I made these. Nothing like a good old batch of chocolate chip cookies - definitely familiar food that keeps us all sane (well, at least me). A friend of mine in Danville gave me this amazing chocolate chip cookie recipe from the New York Times (you can look it up on the internet if interested). I luckily happen upon the necessary Ghirardelli 60% cocoa chips at a grocery store - oh so perfect! Chocolate is not big here in Singapore. Asians generally are not big dessert eaters. When they do have something sweet it's usually fruit oriented and has random things like corn and beans in the bottom. I often miss those large, gooey, chocolaty desserts we americans love so much. Good thing I have an oven and a nice collection of recipes!

Just looking at those cookies has made my mouth water. Yum! Guess I'm making cookies today.
